Reliance Jio Becomes The Largest Wireline Company With 70.3 Lakh Subscribers, Leaving BSNL Behind
October 19, 2022: Reliance Jio has become the largest wireline service provider with 7.3 million (70.3 lakh) subscribers, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday.
It has overtaken the state-run BSNL, which has 7.1 million (70.1 lakh) subscribers. TRAI on Tuesday released the monthly customer data for the month ended August 2022.
According to TRAI data, Reliance Jio added 32.8 lakh, new subscribers, in August, Bharti Airtel added 3.2 lakh subscribers, and Vodafone Idea lost 19.6 lakh subscribers.
With the latest addition of 32.8 lakh mobiles, Jio’s subscriber base has increased to 419.24 million. Airtel ranks second with 363.8 million subscribers.
Jio tops in all three categories of mobile subscriber base, wireline broadband, and wireline
As per the latest data, Jio has topped all three categories in terms of mobile subscriber base, wireline broadband, and wireline.
As per TRAI data, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd had 6.56 million subscribers, Bharti Airtel 5.13 million, and BSNL 3.88 million among the top three wired broadband service providers.
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,173.66 million at the end of Jul-22 to 1,175.08 million at the end of Aug 2022, with a monthly growth rate of 0.12 percent.
Increase in total urban telephone subscriptions
As per the data, the urban telephone subscription increased from 650.40 million at the end of Jul-22 to 651.07 million at the end of Aug-22 and the rural subscription also increased from 523.26 million to 524.01 million during the same period.
TRAI said that the monthly growth rates of urban and rural telephone subscriptions were 0.10 percent and 0.14 percent respectively in the month of August 2022.
The overall teledensity in India increased from 85.11 percent at the end of July 2022 to 85.15 percent at the end of August 2022.
Urban teledensity declined from 134.78 percent at the end of July 2022 to 134.71 percent. However, the rural teledensity increased from 58.37 percent to 58.44 percent during the same period by the end of August 2022.
The share of urban and rural subscribers in total telephone subscribers was 55.41 percent and 44.59 percent respectively at the end of August 2022.
Wireline subscribers increased from 25.63 million at the end of Jul-22 to 25.97 million at the end of Aug’22. The net growth in the wireline subscriber base was 34 thousand with a monthly growth rate of 1.34 percent.
The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers was 92.35 percent and 7.65 percent respectively at the end of Aug-20.
