The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued an order appointing Singh as ONGC chairman for three years and wasted no time in taking charge by holding the first video conference with board members in Mumbai.

It may be mentioned here that the former BPCL chief is the second person from the ‘downstream’ or refining industry to head ‘upstream’ ONGC after Subir Raha, who left Indian Oil in 2001, according to ToI.

Besides Kumar’s appointment, the petroleum ministry announced on Wednesday that board-level changes have been effected by merging the existing posts of director (onshore) and director (offshore) to create the post of director (production).

The post of Director (Strategy and Corporate Affairs) has been created. Both these changes will be effective from March 1, 2023.

“The restructuring of ONGC’s board has been approved in light of emerging trends in the energy sector and national energy priorities,” it said. ONGC is without a full-time head from April 2021.

It was headed by a chairman and a managing director but in the case of 60-year-old Singh, the order states that he has been appointed as chairman.

“Singh has been appointed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas vide letter dated December 7, 2022 as the Chairman of the Company for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or till further orders, whichever is earlier,” ONGC. said in a stock exchange filing.

A mechanical engineer from the National Institute of Technology, Patna, Singh was the Director (Marketing) of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) from October 2018 to September 2021, after which he was elevated as the company’s Chairman and Managing Director. Singh retired as BPCL chief in October 2022 after 13 months.
