An interview with Rohit Maheshwari, Co-Founder & Director, NMG Technologies – a leading provider of Custom Software Development, Mobile App Solutions, E-commerce Development, and UI/UX consulting

In this insightful interview, Rohit Maheshwari, Co-Founder and Director of NMG Technologies, shares his journey in the tech industry and the vision behind his company.

As a leading provider of custom software development, mobile app solutions, e-commerce development, and UI/UX consulting, NMG Technologies is at the forefront of digital innovation. Rohit discusses the importance of tailored solutions and user-centric design in today’s competitive landscape.

Can you share your journey in the tech industry and what led you to establish NMG Technologies?

Rohit Maheshwari: My tech journey kicked off in London, where I spent my formative years from 2000 to 2008. During this time, I completed my graduation and then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Business Systems Analysis and Design from City University, London.

This period was incredible for my growth; I had the chance to work with one of the top 10 digital agencies nestled in Hoxton Square, contributing to projects for high-profile entertainment clients like PlayStation, New Line Cinema, and Twentieth Century Fox.

The biggest challenge was figuring out when to break away and create something truly mine. After finishing my Master’s in 2008, armed with real-world experience and academic knowledge, I knew it was time to chart my own course. I quit my job and founded NMG Technologies in London.

A few years later, my brother Mohit (Co-founder & Director, NMG) and I made the bold move to New Delhi to establish a world-class offshore delivery center, which remains our central development hub today.

We’ve experienced tremendous growth since those early days; today, we’re a team of around 150 professionals.

We are hyper-focused on maintaining our core development in New Delhi, while also running a dedicated sales office based in the US, which has five full-time team members. This is in line with the fact that about 95% of our clients are currently based in the US.

Moreover, one of the journeys I’m particularly proud of, which shows the kind of long-term partnerships we build, is our work with what started as Adaptive Professionals Solution. We were among the early birds who set up the initial tech teams in New York back in 2010.

Over the years, Adaptive grew at the speed of light and was eventually acquired by RGP, a NASDAQ-listed company, in 2018.

We continued our close collaboration, lending our expertise to their new brand product, Hugo by RGP, and to this day, NMG remains their core tech partner.

Beyond my work at NMG, I believe in contributing to the broader business community. I’m actively involved with the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), having served as Chair for the Gurgaon chapter of Young Indians (CII-Yi) in 2022-2023.

I’m also a member of the G20 Young Entrepreneur Alliance, which has allowed me to represent India on several bilateral missions, fostering international collaboration.

How do you differentiate NMG Technologies from other custom software development firms in a competitive market?

Rohit Maheshwari: What truly makes NMG Technologies stand out, even after our 15+ years in the business, is our commitment to providing comprehensive, end-to-end solutions rather than just coding stuff and calling it a day.

We, at NMG, don’t merely build software; we work alongside businesses to solve their actual problems. We help them grow by combining our tech expertise with proven strategies.”

This ensures that our solutions regularly deliver results that speak for themselves. We are quite proud of having worked with startups that grew significantly during our partnership; some even reached public listing or secured major funding rounds.

A great example is our work with Atlys, a mobile visa application platform. When they came to us, they had this uniquely valuable service but couldn’t get enough eyeballs or downloads in the travel tech space.

They had recently raised their seed fund, were looking to grow further and needed a partner to help speed things up.

For Atlys, we didn’t just tinker with their app’s code. We developed a complete growth plan. This involved Custom Software & Mobile App Development to make the user experience better, along with Advanced SEO Optimization, some smart App Store Optimization (ASO), Data-Driven Content Marketing, and targeted Strategic Link-Building.

It was the complete package – core technical stuff aligned with sharp marketing that tackled their visibility problem head-on.

The results for Atlys were evidently quite impressive. We helped them achieve 100000+ Mobile App Downloads and saw a 334K+ increase in organic clicks & ranking for over 1200 keywords. The project wasn’t just about making an app; it was about building their entire digital presence and user base.

So, in simple terms, what makes us different is our passion & ability to blend deep technical development skills with innovative data-driven marketing strategies, all under one roof.

We provide complete solutions focused on real business outcomes – more traffic, users, downloads, and ultimately, more money – making us a strategic partner, not just another vendor.

What emerging technologies do you believe will have the most significant impact on software development in the next few years?

Rohit Maheshwari: While AI has been influencing development for quite some time with tools like code completion and basic testing, we are now entering an era where AI transitions from a passive assistant to a more proactive partner. This is the core idea behind our new venture – nmg.co

We are talking about pioneering the next generation of intelligent systems with capabilities that go far beyond simple task execution. Agentic AI is set to dramatically reshape software development lifecycle.

It will independently decide optimal code and resource use, while also enabling teams of specialized AI agents to collaborate on coding, security, testing, and deployment.

These systems will learn and adapt from past experiences to improve processes and proactively identify issues thus, significantly reducing human intervention.

Additionally, Generative AI capabilities will continue to be powerful enablers within the development process. Most noteworthy, being a customised code generator to offer tailor-made solutions to our clients at different stages of their project lifecycle.

We work closely with our AI teams to develop software using the best available testing frameworks, designed for maximum reliability and security.

With Agentic AI set to launch globally later this year, we can expect a rising demand for our software to serve multiple purposes.

How do you handle conflicts or challenges within your team, and what strategies do you use to maintain morale?

Rohit Maheshwari: The biggest challenge when it comes to conflict is preventing it before it happens. A major part of this is making sure roles and responsibilities are well-defined.

We map out Key Result Areas (KRAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) very clearly for everyone on the team, so there’s no confusion.

When people know exactly what is expected from them and how their work is measured, it massively cuts down on confusion and those awkward moments when nobody knows who should be doing what.

Furthermore, we are hyper-focused on building our core team and handling new inductions in alignment with company mission, vision & values..

When disagreements inevitably pop up (they always do!), we rely heavily on our streamlined process flow. This philosophy is so critical to how we operate that we ended up building our own SaaS platform, processhq.ai.

This web and mobile platform (iOS & Android)  empowers organizations (ourselves included) to streamline tasks, manage processes, and gain deep operational insights across locations and teams.

Having clear processes for communication, escalation, task management (such as our Flow Management System module within ProcessHQ), and even internal support requests (through our Help Ticket System module) provides everyone with a clear, objective framework.

It helps make issues less personal and more solution-oriented based on established workflows rather than opinions or feelings which may be biased. This structured approach reduces frustration; creates a sense of fairness & predictability.

Beyond just the process itself, we maintain morale by constantly reinforcing our shared mission & values, recognizing when individuals and teams do great work, and providing chances to learn and grow.

It is all about building a supportive environment backed by clear expectations and efficient, fair processes.

I believe the future of workplace harmony is headed toward a time when tech will play a major role in keeping teams aligned and motivated.

What advice would you give to aspiring leaders in the tech industry?

Rohit Maheshwari: Mohit and I often wondered, “Why do so many tech startups struggle to survive despite having brilliant ideas and talented teams?”

Drawing from my journey co-founding NMG Technologies two decades ago, I have learnt a few lessons (some the hard way) that are noe rules that I swear by.

Rule 1: My primary advice is simple but crucial: never stop learning. We ensure that we regularly train ourselves and our teams on emerging technologies like AI, evolving market trends, and effective leadership strategies.

Staying curious and constantly upskilling isn’t just nice-to-have – it’s essential for survival in this space. Complacency will kill your business faster than any of your competitors would.

Rule 2: Moreover, we were hyper-focused on financial discipline from day one. My brother and I bootstrapped our business entirely. We made a conscious choice to build our business based on its revenue with a frugal mindset.

We never believed in raising capital from PE funds, family offices or Venture Capitalists. Or burnt money like most startups these days. This meant sticking strictly to a business plan centered on profitability rather than just growth metrics.

While this path requires immense discipline and might mean slower initial expansion compared to heavily funded startups, it builds tremendous resilience and a focus on core business fundamentals.

Believe me, we were approached several times for buy-outs, especially in our initial years. It was exciting, but what we learnt upon meeting them is “how to improve further – focus more on our offerings.”

Most noteworthy – even when we weren’t looking to sell, those conversations provided invaluable external perspectives on our business, highlighting areas where we could strengthen our position.

Rule 3: Due to insufficient innovation, many tech companies eventually become irrelevant in the market. Hence, we ensure that we incorporate continuous innovation into everything we do.

“In technology, standing still means falling behind rapidly”. Innovation isn’t just about inventing the next revolutionary product; it’s about consistently finding better solutions to problems, improving your processes, refining your service offerings, and adapting to the changing needs of your users. It is a continuous journey that needs to be embedded in your company culture.

As much as style, funding & rapid scale cannot be replaced, there will always be a new category of tech businesses that will co-exist with the conventional models – ones built on solid fundamentals.

I believe the future for tech entrepreneurs is headed towards a time where sustainable business models will be key.

Rohit Maheshwari’s leadership at NMG Technologies exemplifies the power of innovation and adaptability in the tech sector.

His commitment to delivering high-quality, customized solutions highlights the evolving needs of businesses in a digital world.

This conversation offers valuable insights for entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts looking to navigate the complexities of software development and user experience.
