Building Confidence through Image: A Conversation with Ruchi Raj, Image Coach

Ruchi Raj, Image Coach & Founder of Poised Presence

An Exclusive Interview with Ruchi Raj, Image Coach & Founder of Poised Presence

Ruchi Raj, founder of Poised Presence, is an internationally certified Image Coach dedicated to helping individuals enhance their personal and professional image through styling, communication, and executive presence.

Her mission is to empower clients to embrace their authentic selves and unlock their full potential with confidence.

As a Harvard and NIFT Delhi alumna with 8+ years at Burberry and Victoria’s Secret, what prompted you to found Poised Presence in June 2024?

Ruchi Raj: Poised Presence was born from a very personal turning point in my life. Being overweight, I spent years hiding in menswear because I didn’t feel confident in my own body. Studying Fashion at NIFT, Delhi helped me step out of that shell, and slowly reclaim my expression.

Working with global brands, and in the fashion-tech space gave me the confidence and the global exposure I never imagined I would have.

But my actual moment of truth came much later, when a couple of lifelong chronic illnesses left me bedridden for almost 6 months, in 2023. When everything else wasn’t in my control, the one thing I could still control was how I showed up.

The first time I stepped out for a doctor’s appointment, I dressed up just to look a little better. My doctor looked at me and said,  “The patient doesn’t look like a patient.”

That sentence changed my life.  It showed me that clothing isn’t superficial, it’s psychological. It can shift identity, improve mood, and rebuild self-image even in the lowest moments of life.

That moment was powerful and became the seed of Poised Presence.

With further learning on leadership from Harvard and my international certification from the London Image Institute, I understood the deeper tools behind expression, analysis, and managing life’s changes.

After almost an year, in June 2024, I chose to build something that didn’t exist in India, a system that uses fashion not as a mere aesthetic, but as a tool for well-being, confidence, and empowerment. I wanted to help others feel what I felt that day: seen, capable, and alive again.

Today, I use everything I’ve learned over 8+ years to help people define their image goals, discover their identity, and feel confident and authentic in their everyday style, no matter their age, size, or shape. “Because Style isn’t vanity, it’s liberation.”, as I always say.

As the first in India to incorporate Dopamine Dressing, how does your proprietary Dopamine Style System™ transform mood, confidence, and presence?

Dopamine Dressing is often misunderstood as just “wear bright colours.”
My approach is far deeper, scientific, and personal. The Dopamine Style System™ that I created integrates 5 design elements and personality.

Imagine a chair, if you observe it closely, it has a certain shape, colour, line, texture, and scale. Almost everything on earth is made of these five design elements, and so is the human body.

After years in the fashion industry, I realised that authentic style isn’t about trends, it’s about aligning these elements with your own personality.

My Dopamine Style System™ combines this design philosophy with principles of dopamine dressing, where colours, textures, patterns, and fabrics have proven psychological effects on our mood and mindset.

When we align these sensory elements with our individual design blueprint, our Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, and Scale, we create a style that doesn’t just look good, but feels right.

One unique aspect of my work is helping clients discover their Dopamine Pieces, those personal anchor items that instantly boost their confidence, presence, and emotional energy.

So the system becomes a holistic approach to dressing: not just for looking good, but for feeling good, thinking clearer, and showing up as your most authentic self. That’s the real power of Dopamine Dressing, the way we practice it at Poised Presence.

How do you make everyday dressing effortless across age, size, and gender, drawing from your training with Lynne Marks at London Image Institute?

Ruchi Raj: Training under Lynne Marks at the London Image Institute was a privilege, she is one of the very few Certified Image Masters in the world with nearly three decades of experience.

Learning from her gave me world-class tools, global perspective, and a refined understanding of how image and presence shape human behaviour.

But my signature approach is different. While many rely on traditional “body shapes,” I treat style as architectural balance.

My USP is analysing body architecture, the lines, proportions, and visual balance of an individual, because that’s what truly determines what works on any body, regardless of age, size, gender, or shape.

I combine this with:

Personal Archetype Mapping to align style with personality

Color Analysis & Color Psychology to support mood and clarity

Sustainable Capsule Building, so dressing becomes repeatable and effortless

This blend of high-level training and my own architectural approach allows me to create style systems that work universally. It makes everyday dressing simple, consistent, and authentic, because when balance is right, style becomes effortless for everyone.

With 4000+ professionals trained, global collaborations, and recognition from Pinterest & the Ministry of Textiles, which achievement best reflects Poised Presence’s mission?

Ruchi Raj: With Poised Presence, the achievement that reflects our mission the most isn’t an award, it’s the moments like these.

A client once told me after a session: “For the first time, I didn’t blame my body for why a garment didn’t look good. I realised the issue wasn’t me, it was simply a piece that wasn’t meant for me.”

That is exactly why Poised Presence exists, to help people see themselves with clarity, kindness, and confidence.

From a recognition standpoint, the Ministry of Textiles award affirmed my ability to bridge fashion and innovation, while Pinterest’s Inclusive Creator recognition validated the importance of purposeful, inclusive style.

My global collaborations and training over 4000+ professionals gave me the most valuable asset, a deep understanding of human behaviour, identity, and how style influences both industry and individual lives.

And honestly, every milestone feels like it arrived at the right time to support this mission. Even my first TEDx talk being on Dopamine Dressing for self-image felt divinely aligned, becoming the first person to speak about it on a TEDx stage, and having it reflect the very heart of Poised Presence: style as a tool for confidence, self-image, and emotional well-being.

Each of these moments reinforces why Poised Presence exists, to transform not just wardrobes, but lives.

How has working with Titan and global brands shaped your sessions for corporates, executives, and entrepreneurs in transition?

Ruchi Raj: Working with Titan, and other global brands/teams gave me a front-row view into how leadership, culture, and personal presence intersect across continents.

Corporate leaders often face:

Role transitions

Market-facing responsibilities

High-pressure visibility

Identity shifts when moving into leadership

Limited time

I structure my sessions to solve exactly these, keeping in mind my key takeaways from industry experience:

In boardrooms, presence speaks before strategy.

In consumer-facing roles, micro-details shape credibility.

In leadership, consistency is more powerful than flamboyance.

In transitions, identity friction is real, signature style eases that shift.

A clear system makes it easier to sustain presence, even on the busiest days.

Today, my corporate and executive programs are built on this triad: Fashion psychology + leadership presence + strategic styling.

The aim is not to change who they are, it’s to elevate how they show up, authentically, powerfully, and without losing their precious time.

Poised Presence aims to democratize style. How will you expand access through group sessions, enterprise clients, and holistic presence-building?

Ruchi Raj: My mission is to make style accessible, not aspirational.

What advice do you give individuals seeking to build an impactful, authentic presence during career transitions or leadership roles?

When someone is navigating a career transition or stepping into a leadership role, I always remind them of my 3F Framework, a core part of my Dopamine Style System™. The three questions that anchor authenticity, clarity, and presence in any phase of life.

FIT: Does it fit who you are today?

Fit is not just body fit; it’s identity fit.
When you move into leadership, you’re expected to take bigger decisions, communicate with more clarity, and hold space for others. Your clothes should reflect that evolution.

Example:  If you’ve transitioned from an individual contributor to a team lead, shift from casual silhouettes to more structured ones. Structure communicates clarity, stability, and readiness, qualities your new role now demands.

FUNCTION: Does this outfit serve today’s purpose?

Every day has a different function: presentations, negotiations, interviews, reviews, or creative brainstorming.

Example: If you’re pitching to investors, your outfit must support presence, clean lines, fewer distractions, and a colour that communicates trust (like navy or forest green). If it’s a high-collaboration day, choose something more fluid and approachable.

Function ensures your style is not just ornamental, it’s strategic.

FEEL: Does it make you feel the way you need to feel in the moment?

This is the emotional anchor.
Clothing should help you feel grounded, confident, or calm, whatever the day requires.

Example: On low-energy mornings, use your dopamine colour to lift your mood. For tough conversations, calming textures help regulate your emotions.

And on high-visibility or media days, reach for your signature power piece, the item that instantly amplifies your confidence.

When you feel right, you show up right. These three questions: Fit, Function, Feel, become the anchor to staying authentic and building a leadership-ready dopamine wardrobe. They work in every phase of life, for every age, size, gender, and profession.

At PoisedPresence, we align your leadership journey with these 3Fs: Fit, Function, Feel, to build a presence that is authentic, impactful, and unmistakably “YOU”.

Because impactful presence doesn’t come from wearing more, it comes from wearing what aligns with you.

With her expertise in personal branding and transformational coaching, Ruchi Raj continues to inspire professionals to make impactful first impressions.

Poised Presence stands as a beacon for those seeking to refine their image and navigate life’s transitions with grace and poise, ensuring every client projects true confidence inside and out.
