Sameer Sadana: My journey into the EdTech industry began when I joined Unacademy as one of its pioneer teachers. Being part of the Super 50 program under Roman Saini’s guidance, I witnessed the emergence of independent educators creating online platforms like Academis.

This revelation led to the realization that the future of education would be shaped by numerous smaller players rather than a few dominant brands. However, these educators often lacked the technological resources available to larger platforms like Unacademy or Byju’s.

This insight inspired the creation of Appx, aimed at providing these educators with state-of-the-art software solutions. Our vision was to empower them with the same technological advantages enjoyed by industry giants.

What sets Appx apart is our unwavering commitment to supporting online educators. Recently, one of our educators experienced unprecedented success, with their app topping the charts on the Play Store’s education category, garnering 80,000 installs in a single day.

Unlike other platforms that may struggle under such demand, Appx ensured smooth operations, showcasing our capability to handle high traffic. Our hyper-focus on online educators from the outset and our ability to deliver cutting-edge technology without exorbitant costs truly distinguish us in the market.

Can you provide an overview of Appx and its mission within the EdTech sector?

Sameer Sadana: At App X, our mission within the EdTech sector is clear: we aim to collaborate with independent educators, aiding in their growth by providing superior technological solutions. Our goal is to surpass existing market players by offering tailored technology solutions that cater to the unique needs of Indian students.

These needs include features like test portals, live classes, and doubt resolution engines, which are essential components of the EdTech landscape. Our vision is to replicate the offline learning experience as closely as possible and then elevate it through the integration of technology.

We strive to enhance comfort and accessibility for learners while delivering unique experiences that are only achievable through innovative technological solutions. Through our dedication to bridging the gap between traditional offline education and online learning, we endeavor to empower educators and students alike, driving forward the evolution of education in India.

How does Appx leverage technology to enhance the learning experience for students and educators?

Sameer Sadana: Appx is dedicated to enhancing the learning experience for both students and educators through innovative use of technology. For students, we prioritize simplicity and accessibility in our app design, ensuring that even those new to online learning can easily navigate and understand the platform.

Our interface is clean and minimalist, making it user-friendly for students from all backgrounds, including those living in rural areas.

For educators, we focus on streamlining processes and reducing overheads associated with online teaching. We offer features that simplify going live, conducting tests, and managing classes, making the transition to online teaching smoother and more convenient. By automating many tasks, we help educators overcome the initial challenges of teaching online and reach a wider audience of students.

One significant way we leverage technology is through our test platform, which has facilitated mock tests with up to 20 lakh (2 million) participants. Additionally, we’ve supported classes with over 100,000 students in attendance.

These achievements demonstrate our ability to handle large-scale events seamlessly, providing educators with the tools they need to engage with their students effectively.

Overall, our use of technology is aimed at overcoming the unique challenges of online education, making learning more accessible, engaging, and efficient for both students and educators.

Could you share some insights into the most significant challenges Appx has faced in the EdTech space and how your team has overcome them?

Sameer Sadana: One of the primary challenges we’ve encountered at Appx in the EdTech space is managing scale while ensuring affordability. While some educators offer courses priced at 200 to 500 rupees and reach thousands of students, delivering high-quality video streaming and live sessions at such low costs presents a technological hurdle.

However, we’ve navigated this challenge successfully, maintaining profitability and sustaining a growth rate of 100% annually. Another key challenge has been maintaining high app ratings. Despite the complexity of our platform and the diversity of devices our users utilize, we’ve achieved impressive app ratings of 4.8 to 4.9 for many of our educators.

This reflects the smooth user experience we’ve prioritized, ensuring that even users with low-end devices can access content seamlessly.

Additionally, we’ve addressed the affordability issue by optimizing our technology to minimize bandwidth costs for students. Many of our users have limited data plans, so we’ve engineered our platform to operate efficiently even under these constraints.

This approach aligns with our commitment to making quality education accessible to all, regardless of financial barriers. Overall, our ability to overcome these challenges demonstrates our team’s resilience and dedication to providing a top-notch educational experience while prioritizing accessibility and affordability.

Collaboration and partnerships are often crucial in the EdTech industry. Can you discuss any strategic alliances or collaborations that have been particularly impactful for Appx?

Sameer Sadana: Thus far, Appx has operated independently without engaging in collaborations or partnerships within the tech industry. Instead, we’ve taken a solitary approach, primarily focusing on interacting with educators and students directly.

By closely listening to their challenges and feedback, we’ve remained attuned to their needs and continuously worked to improve their online learning experiences. While this approach initially presented challenges, as we aimed to address all issues internally, over the past four and a half years, we’ve successfully navigated these hurdles.

As a result, our growth and achievements have been remarkable. Despite our solo stance, our dedication to understanding and resolving the pain points of educators and students has driven significant progress and success for Appx in the EdTech sector.

With the rapid evolution of technology, how does Appx ensure that its platform remains relevant and up-to-date with the latest advancements?

Sameer Sadana: In response to the swift advancements in technology, Appx maintains a proactive approach to staying abreast of industry trends. For instance, we’re currently integrating AI solutions into educators’ learning apps.

This initiative aims to enhance the learning experience for students by leveraging cutting-edge technology. By capitalizing on our extensive user base, which includes millions of paid users annually, we can effectively reduce costs for educators while ensuring profitability for our company.

This strategy enables us to achieve sustainable growth while delivering value to both educators and students.

Furthermore, our commitment to innovation is deeply rooted in our team’s expertise and experience within the education sector. Co-founder Mr. Gupta’s previous involvement with a learning-focused startup, coupled with my  background as an educator, provides us with valuable insights into the industry’s needs and trends.

Drawing on this knowledge, we prioritize technology integration that aligns with the evolving demands of students and educators. At Appx, we adopt a user-centric approach, gathering feedback from students to inform our technology development process.

By understanding their preferences and requirements, we can tailor our platform to meet their evolving needs effectively. While we consistently monitor emerging trends like AI, we ensure that our technological advancements are purposeful and directly address the challenges faced by educators and students in the realm of online learning.

What are your visions for the future of education, and how does Appx aim to contribute to this vision?

Sameer Sadana: In my view, the trajectory of the education and tech markets suggests that courses will become increasingly affordable. Gone are the days of limited content availability; now, with a simple online search, learners have access to a plethora of options.

The competitive landscape favors top-tier educators, marking a shift towards a more meritocratic system where quality is rewarded with student engagement and financial compensation. While technology, notably AI, will undoubtedly enrich the learning experience by providing personalized support and enhancing content delivery, the human element of teaching remains irreplaceable.

Teachers play a pivotal role not only in imparting knowledge but also in inspiring and guiding students. At Appx, we envision a future where education seamlessly integrates technology to offer personalized and enriching experiences for students worldwide.

What are your success tips for young and aspiring entrepreneurs?

Sameer Sadana: My advice for young and aspiring entrepreneurs is to prioritize problem-solving while concurrently considering revenue generation opportunities. Not all problems are lucrative, so it’s crucial to identify issues that have the potential to generate income.

Focus on problems that you can address effectively and establish ownership over your solutions. Break down your entrepreneurial journey into manageable steps, setting revenue milestones such as going from zero to one lakh rupees, then scaling further.

This approach not only simplifies the process but also makes it more enjoyable and sustainable in the long run. Persistence is key, and celebrating small victories along the way can help maintain motivation.

Remember to address real, pressing issues in India; although not all problems may lead to monetary gains, smart and persistent efforts will eventually yield profitable solutions. Lastly, consider emerging markets and industries with growth potential as fertile ground for entrepreneurial endeavors.
