By Mahima Gupta: Dr. Karan Chouhan, an accomplished alumnus from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, has had an inspiring journey from his school days in Jalandhar to becoming a successful doctor.

Dr. Chouhan has not only excelled academically but has also contributed significantly to the medical field through research, philanthropy, and mentorship. In this exclusive conversation, Dr. Chouhan shares insights into his journey, achievements, and the values that have driven him forward.

Can you share a bit about your early years at Apeejay School and how they shaped your career path?

My early years at Apeejay were filled with sports, particularly basketball and cricket. I was quite passionate about sports and dreamt of a career in it. However, things took a turn when I participated in the NASA Space Settlement Design Competition in 9th grade.

This international competition, which involved creating a viable space settlement design, was a life-changing experience. Our team won the second prize initially and the grand prize the following year. This success inspired me to pursue a career in science, eventually leading me to medicine.

How did your experience with the NASA competition influence your decision to pursue medicine?

The NASA competition was a pivotal moment. Working on a project that focused on human survival in space piqued my interest in how science can solve critical problems.

Additionally, hearing stories from my family, especially about my grandmother who aspired to be a doctor but couldn’t pursue it due to the circumstances, deeply motivated me. This blend of inspiration and my growing interest in science made me choose medicine.

How did your family background influence your decision to pursue medicine?

My family has a history of aspiring doctors, though none had achieved that goal due to various circumstances. My grandmother and father both faced challenges that prevented them from pursuing medicine.

Their stories motivated me to fulfil this family dream. The support and values instilled by my family played a crucial role in my decision to become a doctor.

What challenges did you face during your preparation for medical school, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was the lack of a medical background in my family. Most of my family members were in business, so I had to pave my own path in the field of science. I relied heavily on my teachers and seniors for guidance.

Their support, coupled with my dedication and time management skills learnt at Apeejay, helped me excel. I balanced school and coaching, ensuring I never missed regular school classes, which was crucial for my success.

Can you describe your journey through medical college?

I joined Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, in 2016 and graduated in 2023. Medical college was a period of intense learning and personal growth. I studied human anatomy, medicine, and patient care, which was both challenging and rewarding.

Seeing patients recover and their gratitude gave me immense satisfaction. I also cleared the USMLE, which is a step towards my goal of doing my master’s in the USA. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling and has prepared me for the next phase of my career.

What were some of the key achievements during your medical college years?

During my time at Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, I published five research papers and won the ICMR STS 2018 Research scholarship, granted by the Government of India. Additionally, I conducted and participated in numerous free medical camps, following my family’s philanthropic principles.

I also organised eight international and several national seminars for students pursuing Masters in the USA after MBBS.

What advice would you give to current students aspiring to pursue a career in medicine?

My advice would be to stay consistent and trust the process. Listen to your teachers and seniors, as their guidance can provide valuable shortcuts to success. Balance your time between academics and other interests, and never take your school teachers for granted.

Also, stay close to your family and cherish the support they provide. Their encouragement is invaluable, especially during challenging times.

What are your future aspirations in the field of medicine?

I aspire to specialise in oncology or cardiology. These fields are challenging and require a deep understanding of human health, which I am passionate about. I am currently preparing to join a college in the USA for my master’s.

Long-term, I aim to contribute significantly to medical research and patient care, helping improve lives and advancing medical science.
