Set Up an Off-Grid Cabin: How to do It

cabin living

Since the pandemic, there has been quite a noise of people doing off-grid, camping, vanlife and some even went on and built a cabin for themselves. So, if you are dreaming to start a cabin living, this might be the thing for you. It’s fresher, calmer, and you can make do of everything with just a minimal space. But if you are a beginner, you need to make careful considerations while building from the ground up.

Why Off-Grid?

Whether you are in Canada or somewhere else, off-grid or cabin living is

  • Peaceful and good for a weekend getaway.
  • Long-term stay with minimal things to pack.
  • Healthy lifestyle
  • Low cost

There’s also that sense of going back to nature and the effect of solitude that makes off-grid the best choice of living.

But before beginning, you will need to prepare three things:

  1. Power
  2. Water
  3. heat

Power: How To Get It

While you are living far from home or from the city, isolated from anything, you will need power to set up your cabin. You can get some things by some options:

Power SourceGoodNot Good
Solar Power/PanelsQuiet, renewable, Can take up a lot of gadgets/appliances depending on the panelsExpensive to install
Wind TurbinesGood around windy areasNot as useful without wind
GeneratorCheaper and stronger,Noisy, it needs fuel, and some are too smokey
Battery BankCan be charged through solar or wind panels/powerNeeds maintenance every now and then

Most cabin owners usually go for solar panels and generators to ensure power sufficiency.

Additional tip:

  1. Make sure you get enough panels for your cabin.
  2. Get an inverter.
  3. Get a generator or a battery bank if your budget allows for cloudy days.

Clean Water: How to get it

Clean water is an essential part of your cabin life, however getting water to your off-grid cabin is not easy because not all cabins have any sources.

What you can do:

  1. You can get water through rainwater collection by installing rooftop gutters and getting a storage tank. By adding filters, you can make the rainwater from the tank drinkable.
  2. You can check around your land if you have underground water. If you have, hire a well driller to make a well.
  3. You can get water from nearby lakes or rivers. Only thing you should do is to make it like your source from the location to your cabin then install filters or apply treatments to make the water drinkable.

Tips to filter and purifier your water:

To ensure that the water is safer to drink, you can:

  1. Buy a filter system off from stores.
  2. Use sand or ceramic filters for greater results.
  3. Add a UV filter.
  4. Boil the water.
  5. Chlorine tablets are also good for back up.

If you are in Canada, it will be a good choice to keep your pipes insulated to avoid having it freeze during winter.

Heat: How To Warm Up Your Cabin

During winters, the cold might be hard to deal with. You may have a fireplace or a heating system but first:

Always make sure to insulate your cabin.

Use curtains as much as possible to keep the heat inside.

Use a small fan to help spread the heat around.

What you can use:

  1. Use a woodstove since it’s classy and reliable.
  2. Use a solar air heater which works well during daylight.
  3. A thermal mass stove is great as it stores heat and releases it slowly.

Finally,

Cabin living is more than the trend that it is now. However, it is a lifestyle that can eventually be useful. If you want peace, independent and simple living then off-grid will be good for you. Just make sure you remember everything here to start off your cabin life.
