Tell us a little about yourself

Shruti Vij: Gurugram based artist Shruti Vij , is a product of the prestigious National Institute Of Fashion Technology ( NIFT) , New Delhi, and is an art enthusiast , a painter with a distinct individual style.

Always an evid follower of art, the artist herself acknowledges art her true calling when recently, she decided to plunge her head into the world of painting.

Shruti Vij, an Indian based artist who’s originally a Leather designer by profession, Shruti blended her artistic skills with her experiences in the fashion field, bringing about a perfect marriage of her two passions.

Art paved a way for her to express her feelings and experiences in no other way she had experienced before. She terms it as therapeutic and a healing process.

Painting for her is a passion and not a mere vocation that gives her an outlet to express her innermost feelings by creating a colourful world.

Shruti’s art is not limited by style or technique. She likes to leave it free. It is about what touches her heart. The common element that runs through all her works is beauty that appeals to everyone and puts a smile on viewer’s face.

During the past few years, Shruti has participated in many art shows , mostly in and around Delhi and has won great appreciation from art lovers and critics alike. She has an art studio by the name of Shruti Arts.

How did you get your idea or concept for Shruti Arts?

Shruti Vij: My journey into entrepreneurship was led by art. I am an artist and I trained at NIFT Delhi. After my post graduation I did not take up a full-time job with an organisation, because I felt that would stifle my creativity.

As a free-spirited artist I wanted to explore my own potential which is why I started selling my artworks.

I set up Shruti Arts to spread the word about the kind of work I do and I am glad to say that I have been very lucky to have such a great response to my platform which curates my artworks and I use it to sell it all over the world.

What type of artworks and painting do you offer?

Shruti Vij: I do mixed media artworks and acrylic paintings on canvas. These are my original handmade artworks which I sell all over the world with certificates of authenticity to the buyer.

What is unique about Shruti Arts?

Shruti Vij: Today there are several art prints and copied artworks floating in the market . This causes a deterioration in the quality of the artworks.

The prints fade away with time or are of not of superior qualities. The uniqueness of my business is that all the artworks are original handmade by me.

What made you choose this type of business?

Shruti Vij: I am a trained designer. Well, it’s not exactly a switch for me. Designing is creative and so is art.

For me designing has always been a way to express myself but there are commercial limitations when you work for someone.

Art, on the other hand, is free and without boundaries. I can do what I like when I am painting, which may not be the case when I am designing. Art gives me chance to experiment more with mediums, colours and moods.

What was your mission at the outset?

Shruti Vij: One of the functions of the artist is is to make a statement of some kind. Somehow the artist tries to communicate an idea , an emotion, or a purpose in their work.

I do not subscribe to complicated concepts, my idea of art is simply beauty. I like to leave it free , it’s about what touches my heart.

The common element that runs through all my works is beauty that appeals to everyone and puts a smile on the viewer’s face.

What’s your company’s goals?

Shruti Vij: During the past few years, I have participated in many art shows , mostly in and around Delhi and has won great appreciation from art lovers and critics alike.

I have an art studio by the name of Shruti Arts. I have taken part in several national and international exhibitions, contributed my artworks for noble causes, judged art competitions, participated in various art workshops collaborated with interior designers and have done two solo art shows. And in coming times , will achieve more and inspire people though my artworks.

How do you build a successful customer base?

Shruti Vij: The internet has no limitations and I think it is a great tool to reach out to a global audience. Originally it was not a conscious decision to focus on digital, but I started curating my works on the website to build a platform for them and to showcase them to a larger global audience.

The rest just followed. I started getting inquiries through the website for selling my designs and I thought of growing it further. My inspiration was always my art and a desire to showcase it to a larger audience.

What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

Shruti Vij: In my case, since I started small, I did not have any problems pertaining to funds. All I needed was some space for my art studio and some art equipment.

I started off with a small room in my house, and made it my studio where I would do my painting. The art materials came out of the savings I had made over a few years.

My family has been very supportive of my work and have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.

Of course, the journey is not always a smooth one. There are everyday issues that you have to take in your stride, some big and some small but at the end of the day, it’s a joyous journey.

Your focus should be on your expertise and what you are offering and the money will follow. I am focused on my art and always strive to better it.

When I get appreciation for that it means a lot to me and when people want to have it for keeps, make a part of their lives, it is highly gratifying.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

Shruti Vij: My source of creativity is fuelled by many things such as travel, personal transformation, textiles and all things colourful; the biggest source of inspiration is investigating my own life.

I dig underneath the surface, the spaces and places that are not seen but felt, that have no words….the spiritual aspects of life.

I need to stay inspired, I rely on my own intuition and the concept of ‘working with what’s working ‘ to keep momentum as my paintings emerge naturally on their own time.” My exquisite artworks are mainly in acrylics but I also loves to work with mixed media.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve made?

Shruti Vij: I have been very lucky that I think my journey has been very smooth. My family has been very supportive of my work and have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I don’t look back, God has been very kind. Let bygones be bygones.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Shruti Vij: Since the journey is long, it is important to have courage and belief in your work. Don’t get dejected by criticism.

Some times, the response may come very slowly, but if you have faith in what you are doing, you will get there.

It’s not always smooth sailing, so you have to take the ups and downs of your journey as they come. Keep the faith strong and keep surging ahead.

Does Shruti Arts help the community or society?

Shruti Vij: Yes, my company Shruti Arts has donated paintings for various noble projects. I have contributed my artworks to UNICEF for publication of greeting cards. My artworks are also part of AAS NGO for ‘beti bachao beti padao ‘ campaign.
