SpiceJet Sends 80 Pilots On Three Months Unpaid Leave, The Move Was A Temporary Cost-cutting Measure

September 23, 2022: The pilots forced to take unpaid leave are from the fleets of airlines Boeing and Bombardier. Budget airline SpiceJet said Tuesday that it has asked 80 pilots to take three months of unpaid leave.

The Gurgaon-based airline said the move was a temporary cost-cutting measure. “This move is in line with SpiceJet’s employee absence policy, which the airline has been steadfast in even at the height of the Covid pandemic, and will help streamline the number of pilots and the number of aircraft,” Cheap said.

The airline said in a statement. The pilots forced to take unpaid leave are from the fleets of airlines Boeing and Bombardier.

Earlier Tuesday, some pilots were upset about the financially troubled airline’s decision. “We were aware of the airline’s financial crisis, but the sudden decision shocked many.

There is also uncertainty about the company’s financial position three months from now. There is no certainty that the forced people will be recalled,” the pilot told PTI.

This is the first time an airline has forced pilots to take leave in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to current and former SpiceJet employees spoke to by PTI. “However, due to the pandemic, foreign pilots have been laid off and flight attendants have been deployed to the LWP multiple times since 2020.

There have also been salary cuts,” said a former SpiceJet employee who retired last year. Meanwhile, SpiceJet said it recorded more than 30 aircraft in 2019 after the 737 MAX aircraft was grounded.

The airline continued with its planned pilot introduction program in hopes of returning the MAX to service soon.

However, SpiceJet has a large number of pilots redundant due to the ongoing grounding of the MAX fleet, the company said.

“We will soon be introducing MAX aircraft and these pilots will return to duty once the introduction begins,” the statement said.

The airline has ensured pilots are entitled to all other employee benefits during the LWP period all selected insurance benefits and employee vacation travel.

Even after certain pilots have gone on unpaid leave, SpiceJet will still have enough pilots to operate a full flight schedule once DGCA flight restrictions are lifted. ”
