Open Forum at Sterling Ramkrishna Speciality Hospital

13January 2025, Gandhidham: Leading specialty hospital of Gandhidham, Sterling RamKrishna Specialty Hospital managed by Sterling Hospitals recently organized an open forum   on “Head & Neck Cancer Post Operative Care”. 

The objective behind the seminar was to guide and educate the relatives of the head and neck cancer patients about the post operative care to be taken.

The number of cancer cases in India is increasing, and head and neck cancer (HNC) accounts for 30% of all cancer cases. Use of smokeless tobacco (pan masala, gutka, zarda, etc.) is the maximum in Gujarat, it is responsible for a large majority of these cancers.

Many head and neck cancers constituted the tongue, buccal mucosa, and alveolus cancers. Radiotherapy and surgery were major treatment options for 44% of patients.

Address the gathering and guiding about the treatment while extending support to survivors, Dr Nikunj Chauhan, Surgical Oncologist at Sterling Ram Krishna Specialty Hospital said “For the cancer survivors, it’s a must to make changes in the lifestyle in the post treatment phases to  have good recovery.

Patient families need to learn and support behavioral change for making tough decisions to change in the overall lifestyle. “

Dr Nikunj further emphasized problems like trismus (difficulty opening the mouth), throat and shoulder pain, change in taste, difficulty in chewing, facial oedema, chaotic appearance and remedies provided with detailed guidelines to the patients in order to rebuild confidence as well resilience to come stronger over all difficulties.

As most of the patients must undergo radiation therapy, the aftereffects of radiation are high. Radiation Oncologist Dr. Hiren Pujara highlighted the complications of radiation such as skin changes, sore throat, fatigue, and other symptoms.

He explained the measures to control these symptoms and the importance of regular follow-up. He counselled the patients who  openly discussed difficulties arising in their daily lives, such as difficulty eating and drinking, pain management, and psychological challenges.

Dr Hiren said “Multidisciplinary care is important post-treatment. Regular follow-up and rehabilitation therapy are necessary for long-term results. Patients and relatives   can take help of support groups in coping with mental and physical challenges.”

Medical Oncologist, Dr. Mohit Modi, further supporting Dr Hiren’s point, explained the outcomes of head and neck cancer, ways to improve the appearance as part of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, and the importance of follow-up to ensure the cancer does not recur.
