Padma Shri Awardee, Dr. Swati Piramal Success Story: Founder of Piramal Foundation, Gopikrishna Piramal Hospital, and Vice Chairperson of Piramal Group.
Swati Piramal was born on 28 March 1956 in a Gujarati family with a business background in Mumbai. Her father’s name is Niranjan Shah, runs a textile business, and mother’s name is Smt. Arunika Shah, a chef who runs “Celebrate, a catering business.
Dr. Swati completed her schooling from St. Xavier’s College, and Walsingham House School, Mumbai. She obtained her Master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She received her medical degree, an M.B.B.S from Mumbai University in 1980.
She completed her Doctorate after her marriage. Dr. Swati is an industrialist, Indian scientist and is involved in healthcare, focusing on innovation and public health. She is an alumnus of the Harvard School of Public Health. She is the Vice-Chairperson of Piramal Enterprises Ltd. She is married to Ajay Piramal of the Piramal Group in 1976.
About Piramal Foundation:
Piramal Foundation was founded by Padma Shri Awardee, Dr. Swati Piramal. It is a philanthropic arm of Piramal Group. The NGO undertakes projects under broad areas including education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and livelihood creation.
Projects of Piramal Foundation:
Sarvajal: It is a social enterprise that provides clean water through Water ATM’s. Sarvajal Enterprise Management System presently operates in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Swasthya: Earlier is known as Health Management and Research Institute (HMRI). This project is also called “Arogya Vani”. The project has signed a deal with the Karnataka government. Swasthya is a non-profit organization supported by Piramal Foundation to provide a Health Information Help Line Services.
Udgam: This project is providing employment opportunities to rural youth. Through comprehensive and rigorous training, Udgam call center trains the youth, which 70 percent are rural women.
Leadership school: This project was inaugurated in December 2013. The Leadership development program is especially for government school headmasters. It is to develop leadership skills and relevant knowledge to impact the quality of education in the schools. The Piramal School of Leadership (PSL) offers a three-year Principal Leadership Development Program.
Fellowship program: This Piramal Fellowship program is run for Education Leadership by Piramal Foundation. It is imperative on how to manage a school, how to lead teachers, and how to participate effectively within the community.
