Kulwant Kaur is an example for farmer’s families of Punjab.
Kulwant Kaur, founder of KKNS Products of India, may be only a 10th pass, but women’s of Amrala village of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab know her as a successful women entrepreneur of India.
Today, Kulwant Kaur and Jaswinder Singh are running a small processing business in the name of KKNS Products of India. Kulwant is the daughter of a farmer family and got married in a farmer family.
Earlier, her family used to cultivate on their two and a half acres of land. But even after hard work, could not get much profit.
She wanted to improve the financial condition of her family and hence always try to do something or the other.”
Kulwant worked from weaving, embroidery and tried her hand at many things other than farming.
Previously, Kulwant Kaur with husband Jaswinder Singh farmed dairy and had 30 buffaloes on their dairy farm.
She faced a lot of financial challenges and difficult situations since childhood, but never gave up.
About a decade ago, Kulwant Kaur started her career by making raw turmeric pickle. Today she manufactures more than 40 types of products.
This business is not only running her house, but she is also able to provide employment to other women of the village.
Entrepreneurial Journey
One day Jaswinder Singh read in a newspaper that Fatehgarh Sahib Krishi Vigyan Kendra had organized a free training program on management of fruits and vegetables.
He knew that Kulwant would be interested in it, so he told Kulwant to participate too. It was five-day training program, which Kulwant Kaur used to visit Krishi Vigyan Kendra from her village every day.
On the last day of training, a competition was held among all the participants. She made apple jam and raw turmeric pickle. Kulwant Kaur got the first prize in this competition.
Her “Haldi Ke Achaar” was liked by people and her confidence increased when she won this small contest. She felt that now she can do anything.
She was determined that she would not let her talent go to waste. In 2011, she started making turmeric pickle with very little investment.
She bought some raw turmeric, put its pickle, and set up stalls outside the gurudwaras and in PAU fairs.
In these fairs, many people buy her products and then these people gradually started ordering more products. She also sells her products in the nearby market.
After a few months, she started making turmeric pickle as well as its powder and juice.
Kulwant Kaur started getting good orders. She also started gathering information about different training programs of Krishi Vigyan Kendra so that she could learn to make more new things.
She also took training in making Soap, Phenyl, Amla Juice, Chutney, shampoo etc. from Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
Along with this, she also joined the Farmers Club of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU Kisan Club) and did all the free training programs provided here.
Started own Business
During Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s training programs, Kulwant Kaur met farmer Nirmal Singh. Nirmal Singh says that he also wanted to set up a processing unit.
Along with her husband and family, Kulwant Kaur started her venture with Nirmal Singh.
They bought processing machines from Delhi. With this processing machine, they process crops like Amla, Aloe vera easily.
After purchasing the machine, she started making more than 40 products like Amla Juice, Aloe Vera Juice, Squash, Satras, Amla Candy and Pickles.
It becomes very difficult for women to work outside the village, Nirmal Singh. But an effort of Kulwant Kaur gave many women the courage.
Now, KKNS Products is cultivating different types of turmeric, aloe vera and many types of fruits and processing to produce good quality products.
She used to earn more than 50,000 in a month. Also, she had given employment to many women.
But the lockdown and the corona pandemic have had a huge impact on their business as the agricultural fairs are closed. In such a situation, he has opened a small outlet of his own.
Kulwant Kaur believes that women of all farmer’s families must find some way of earning extra income.
Kulwant Kaur’s son and daughter-in-law also help in her work. They have also set up their stalls in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai.
Kulwant Kaur has received many honors like ‘Sardarni Jagbir Kaur Memorial Award’ for his work.
