An Exclusive Interview with Author Surbhi Gupta, a dedicated humanitarian and poet, whose work focuses on the themes of healing, femininity, and nature.
In an exclusive interview with author and poet Surbhi Gupta, we delve into her powerful work that explores healing, femininity, and nature.
Her debut book of poems, Iron Draped in Silk, beautifully captures her humanitarian spirit. Surbhi believes women hold the key to restoring balance to our world, a timely message for all.
Can you share a bit about your journey as a poet and humanitarian? What inspired you to intertwine these two passions?
Surbhi Gupta: I wanted to give out a message. I didn’t want to write something that was empty and did not leave an impact or did not influence the society in a positive way.
Your poetry often explores themes of healing. How do you define healing, and what role does it play in your writing?
Surbhi Gupta: I feel healing is the demand of today. We encounter so many triggering elements in our day-to-day life. I felt poetry was the easiest form through which healing could be provided.
How do you approach the theme of femininity in your work? Are there specific experiences or influences that shape your perspective on this topic?
Surbhi Gupta: Feminism as a topic has been ultra-exploited, but not in a positive way. Nobody talks about the goodness of feminine energy Everybody is talking about the bad things as if feminism only has a bad side to it. I wanted to bring out the stronger, the more positive side of being a woman.
Can you discuss some of the humanitarian initiatives you are involved in? How do these efforts influence your poetry and vice versa?
Surbhi Gupta: I would say the most humanitarian aspect that I’ve been involved in my life is uplifting other women because that uplifts the entire society in a very direct way.
What does your writing process look like? Do you have any rituals or practices that help you tap into your creativity?
Surbhi Gupta: I draw a lot of experiences from the women around me. Rather, anything and everything that I write is taken from life experiences that I have gained from my mother, from my grandmother, from my sisters, even from young women.
There’s so much to learn, so I literally just look around and look for learnings and look for experiences and their life experiences and then jot down what I feel about life in general.
In your opinion, what is the role of poetry in social change and healing? How do you see your work contributing to these areas?
Surbhi Gupta: Poetry can make a huge role in social change because it kind of has a method to connect. So, you know, even if you hear triggering poems, it kind of just immediately connects to you and starts resonating with you. I wanted to use poetry to bring about a positive reform and that’s exactly what I did.
Are there any upcoming projects or themes you are excited to explore in your future work?
Surbhi Gupta: I’m excited to interact with young audience, with young women, even the older ones. You know, I’m very excited to talk to them as to how my poetry changed their lives, how it impacted them, how it resonated with them.
And I’m also very open to negative opinion, to how somebody might feel that what I wrote wasn’t correct. So these are the things that really excite me. So as of now, I’m just enjoying doing that. Of course, there’s another book in the pipeline.
What advice would you give to aspiring poets and writers who want to incorporate social issues into their work?
Surbhi Gupta: I feel that if you have the gift of writing, then you must send out a social message into the world even if it’s through a fictional story.
And the kind of social change that you will eventually see, like I’m only three months into my book, but the kind of change that I see in a few people who have read my poetry, the kind of messages that I receive, you know, the happiness that it gives you has no bounds.
It’s boundless. And India as a country, we’re in that stage where a lot of things are changing swiftly. And, you know, if a right motive or if a right agenda is presented at the right time in any society, then it only moves towards progress and helps the society towards its right development.
Surbhi Gupta’s unique perspective resonates deeply, offering a path to personal and collective healing. Her poetry is a testament to the power of the female spirit and our sacred connection to the earth. As entrepreneurs, we can all draw inspiration from her mission to nurture and revive what has been lost.
