Swati Piramal has been awarded France’s top civilian honor ““Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”” for her contribution to business and industry, science, medicine and strengthening India-France relations.
London, September 16: Renowned Indian women entrepreneur and businesswoman Dr. Swati Piramal has been awarded France’s top civilian honor for her contributions in the fields of trade and industry, science, medicine and strengthening India-France relations.
Swati Piramal, 66, is the vice-chairperson of the Mumbai-headquartered Piramal Group, a business conglomerate with interests in pharmaceuticals, financial services, real estate and glass packaging.
She was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, or Knight of the Legion of Honor, at an investiture ceremony by France’s Europe and Foreign Affairs Minister Catherine Colonnade during her visit to India this week.
The award was presented on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron. Colonna said that Dr. Swati Piramal is not only a leading and outstanding businesswoman, but also a women entrepreneur who gives back to the society.
Her strong influence on business and industry, public policy, healthcare governance and women’s leadership is widely recognized in India and abroad.
Through this award, France wishes to be recognized Dr Swati Piramal at the highest level as a true friend of France, a driving force for advancing India-France relations in the fields of science, art, culture, cuisine and business, she said.
For Piramal, it follows France’s second highest civilian honor of Knight of the Order of Merit, the Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite, in 2016.
As a leading businessman and scientist, Dr Swati Piramal says her focus is on innovations, new medicines and public health, and he also believes in promoting India-France relations in trade and industry, innovation and art and culture.
I am truly humbled to be honored with the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. This honor is also a recognition of the efforts of my colleagues at Piramal in India and internationally, in trade and business, science, arts and culture.
This recognition motivates us to work towards further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two nations. The Piramal Group has a long association with France, both in the fields of art and culture and business.
I am confident that this recognition will take our partnership to greater heights in the future, she said. Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honor is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for distinguished service to France, regardless of nationality.
Piramal also received the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, as a champion of developing structures and policies to support women in leadership roles.
She has served as a member of the Business Advisory Council and the Scientific Advisory Council of the Prime Minister of India and is currently on the Harvard Global Advisory Council.
As Director of the Piramal Foundation, she is also involved in developing innovative long-term and scalable solutions that will further accelerate India’s economic and social progress.
She leads the foundation’s efforts towards effective public policy and governance in public health, water and education through a private-public-partnership (PPP) model for solutions and contributing to India’s Sustainable Development Goals, the Piramal Group said.
The company highlighted that the Piramal Museum of Art in Mumbai is currently hosting the ‘Science beyond Borders’ exhibition which runs till the end of September.
Curated by the French Institute in India and its partners, the exhibition showcases the rich history of scientific cooperation between the two countries.
The exhibition is part of Bonjour India 2022, a large-scale cultural and artistic festival organized by France to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence and 75 years of diplomatic relations between France and India.
