Tata Trust Appoints Siddharth Sharma As CEO, Aparna Uppaluri As COO – Who Are They?

January 2023: New Delhi: In a changing of the guard at Tata Trusts, one of India’s oldest public charitable foundations, Siddharth Sharma has been named the new Chief Executive Officer and Aparna Uppaluri as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). Both his appointments will be effective from the next financial year i.e. April 1.

Tata Trusts, which owns 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, said in a statement on Tuesday. Several internal candidates were already being analyzed by the foundation’s board of trustees after Tata Group stalwart Srinath Narasimhan retires in October 2022 at the age of 60.

Last month it emerged that Siddharth Sharma, group chief sustainability officer (CSO) of Tata Sons, and Sukaran Singh, CEO of Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), were in the race to move into the corner office.

Who is Siddharth Sharma?

After two decades in government service, Sharma became part of the Tata Group in 2019. As a bureaucrat, he worked and played important roles in key ministries and government departments, including the Ministries of Finance, External Affairs and Urban Development.

Role in conception and implementation of pension reforms in India in the form of National Pension System.

He has also served as financial advisor to the 13th and 14th Presidents of India. Sharma was the financial advisor to late President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012-17. He then joined the Salt-to-Airline group where he is leading the newly formed sustainability portfolio.

Currently group CSO, Sharma is responsible for overseeing ESG (environment, social and governance) initiatives and in that capacity heads the Tata Sustainability Group and chairs the Tata Group Sustainability Council, reported the Economic Times.

Who is Aparna Uppaluri?

Set to take over as COO of Tata Trusts, Uppaluri brings experience in strategic planning and program development in the fields of philanthropy, women’s rights, public health, arts and culture.

With over 20 years of leadership and management experience, she has led grant-making initiatives at the Ford Foundation to advance programmatic commitment to strengthening gender justice and has also served as Program Director overseeing various verticals at the Ford Foundation.
