Tripat Girdhar – Founder and Principal Architect at Arete Design Studio

An Exclusive Interview with Tripat Girdhar – Founder and Principal Architect at Arete Design Studio, a leading Chandigarh-based architecture firm

In this interview, Tripat Girdhar, Founder and Principal Architect of Arete Design Studio, discusses his journey leading a top Chandigarh-based firm known for innovative, sustainable architecture across residential, commercial, and group housing projects, shaping contemporary urban landscapes.

Can you share the story behind founding Arete Design Studio and what inspired you to become an architect?

Tripat Girdhar: Arete Design Studio was born out of the aim to create spaces that are purposeful and designed mindfully. I wanted to build spaces that feel human, intentional, and timeless.

My primary inspiration to pursue architecture stems from the core belief that well-designed environments can change how people live, work, and interact, for the better. Arete Design Studio was created to bring to life a practice that blends thoughtful functionality with meaningful design.

How do you balance functionality with aesthetics in your projects?

Tripat Girdhar: At Arete Design Studio, functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand. For us, understanding how a space will be used is the first step, and once the function is clear, the form follows. Through mindful planning, material choices, and spatial harmony, we achieve designs that are both beautiful and purpose-driven.

What role does sustainability play in your architectural practice?

Tripat Girdhar: Sustainability is at the heart of our design approach. We are conscious about choosing eco-friendly materials and integrating energy-efficient systems into the spaces we design.

Moreover, we also emphasise passive design strategies to reduce environmental impact and create healthier spaces.

Can you describe some recent projects that best reflect your studio’s vision and innovation?

Tripat Girdhar: First Avenue and Opus One by GB Realty are two spaces that reflect our vision. Both combine innovation, modern architecture, and technology while ensuring sustainability, showcasing the evolution of our design language.

What are the top interior design or architectural trends you see emerging in 2025?

Tripat Girdhar: One trend that we have consistently witnessed is the rise of industrial-style interiors, marked by raw textures, exposed structural elements, and a blend of minimalism with modern functionality. It’s a style that adds depth and character to spaces.

What are some challenges you face in convincing clients to adopt sustainable design practices, and how do you overcome them?

Tripat Girdhar: One of the biggest hurdles is the perception of higher upfront costs. To offset this, we highlight the long-term benefits, right from reduced energy consumption to positive environmental impact and improved well-being. Once clients see the value, they understand sustainability is more of an investment rather than a mere expense.

How does Arete integrate green building practices and energy-efficient design solutions in projects?

Tripat Girdhar: We incorporate passive cooling techniques, optimise natural lighting, and use systems like solar energy and rainwater harvesting. We also prioritise recyclable and locally sourced materials to minimise the carbon footprint.

How are technologies like BIM, VR,  shaping your design process?

Tripat Girdhar: These technologies have transformed the way we work. They enhance precision, streamline workflows, and offer clients an immersive visual experience before construction begins. With BIM, VRI, we’re designing smarter, more efficient, and more innovative spaces.

Could you share some of the developers or brands that Arete Design Studio has collaborated with?

Tripat Girdhar: We’ve had the privilege of collaborating with reputed names such as Marbella Group, Optus Group, Jubilee Group, Medallion Group, EVOQ Group, Vamana Group, and Suncity Group, among others.

What sort of projects does Arete Design Studio handle — personal, residential, or commercial?

Tripat Girdhar: We have a diverse portfolio that includes:

  • Group housing and residential projects, from large township-style developments to premium apartments
  • Commercial ventures that combine functionality, innovation, and sustainable design

We also design Institutional, hospitality, and educational spaces. Our goal is to create meaningful spaces that are thoughtfully integrated with nature.

How do you ensure each project retains its uniqueness while staying true to the studio’s design ethos?

Tripat Girdhar: We see every project as a fresh story shaped by its context, client needs, and cultural relevance. While the narrative changes each time, our core principles, simplicity, functionality, and design integrity, remain constant.

How do you see architecture influencing the future of urban living in India and beyond?

Tripat Girdhar: Architecture has long influenced how people live, interact, and experience a place, and its role is only becoming more and more pronounced.

As India and the world move towards denser, more connected urban environments, architecture will shape the future by driving sustainable development, smarter infrastructure, and human-centric design.

What advice would you give to young architects aspiring to make a difference through design?

Tripat Girdhar: Stay curious and stay grounded. Always remember that architecture is about people. Understand human behaviour, observe how spaces influence emotions, and design with empathy and responsibility.

What are Arete Design Studio’s expansion plans? Are you exploring new cities, international collaborations, or new design verticals?

Tripat Girdhar: We are actively expanding across major Indian cities with a strong focus on innovative Group Housing and Commercial projects. We aim to explore new design horizons while maintaining our commitment to sustainability and modern urban design.

Tripat Girdhar’s forward-thinking vision and dedication have positioned Arete Design Studio as a leader in Indian architecture. His firm’s distinguished designs and client-centric approach continue to redefine standards for excellence in Chandigarh and beyond.
