Attempt To Stop Immigration To The UK? UK’s New Visa Policy May Reduce The Period Of Stay Of Foreign Students To 6 Months If They Do Not Get A Job

January 2023: According to a report published in The Times, the UK government is considering “reforming” the graduate visa route which requires students to obtain a work visa after finding a skilled job or leaving the UK after six months.

The UK government seems to be working on a plan to reduce the amount of immigration in the country.

Under the current graduate visa route, foreign students, including Indians, are given two years to gain work experience of up to two years without the need for a specific job offer, but a proposal to reduce this period to six months is under consideration. , indicates a report.

According to a report published in The Times, the UK government is considering “reforming” the graduate visa route which requires students to obtain a work visa after finding a skilled job or leaving the UK after six months.

According to the British Home Secretary Suella Braverman, a plan has been prepared to reduce the period of stay approved for foreign students under the post-study visa route.

The report also mentions that the UK Department for Education (DfE) is trying to block the reform because it fears the move will harm the UK’s attractiveness to international students.

The report cited a government source supporting Braverman’s plan, saying that graduate visas are being used by students on short courses at “less respectable universities”. “They are used as a backdoor immigration route,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

According to official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Indian students were the biggest beneficiaries of the new graduate visa route introduced in July 2021. In 2021, the share of Indians in the visas given under this route was 41 percent.

Braverman’s reform proposal is mentioned in many other similar proposals. The UK government has reportedly asked the Home Office and the Department of Education to submit proposals to reduce the number of foreign students coming to the UK.
