Vijay Mallya’s lawyer has requested the Supreme Court to discharge him from the case. The lawyer said he had not received any communication from the former Kingfisher boss “for a long time” and wanted to be relieved of his duties in the matter.
The SC asked the lawyer to submit Mallya’s e-mail and residential addresses to the court registry within a week and allowed him to start the process of withdrawing his legal representation for the fugitive.
Mallya’s lawyer made the plea during the hearing of a plea filed by the former liquor baron seeking a stay on the seizure of all properties owned by him and his relatives.
Mallya had pleaded that no assets other than Kingfisher Airlines should be attached. The hearing comes nearly 4 months after the SC on July 11 sentenced the fugitive businessman to four months in a contempt case.

The apex court also asked Mallya to deposit back $40 million with 8% interest within four weeks, failing which the properties would be confiscated.
In 2017, the SC held Mallya guilty of contempt of court on two counts – for withholding information from the court about transferring $40 million to his children in violation of a court order, and for “flagrant violation” of orders passed by the Karnataka High court. The court had then asked the government to take steps to secure Mallya’s presence in India.
