Will Twitter Character Limit Increase? Elon Musk Thinks It’s Good For Public Discourse

October 31, 2022: Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, announced on Saturday that Twitter users will be able to choose the version of the social media platform they like by rating their tweets in the future.

“It’s probably better to be able to choose which version of Twitter you want, as it would be for a movie maturity rating,” he said.

New Delhi: Tesla CEO and world’s richest man Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on Thursday and one of the first things he did after becoming the new owner of the company was to fire the CEO and several other top executives.

Kasturi, whose first public reaction after the takeover was “the bird is free”, seems to have many ideas to make the bird even freer.

After firing CEO Parag Aggarwal, CFO Ned Segal and others, the billionaire announced the creation of a content moderation council with a “broadly diverse viewpoint.” He said there would be no major content decisions or account reinstatement before the council convenes.

It also came to light that on his first day on the job, Musk asked Twitter engineers to print his code for review. The engineers were asked to show the code to Tesla engineers, who were summoned to Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, so “they could assess what the company needed and explain to Musk.”

Musk spoke on the platform in April about free speech being consistent with the law. Now, in line with this view and to promote better public discourse, the 51-year-old may look to expand the character limit of tweets which currently stands at 280.

On Sunday, Daniel Ku, a Chinese-Taiwanese-Canadian man, asked Twitter’s new owner if they could get rid of character limits, or at least greatly expand them.

“There is one real good thing about Wechat over Twitter. Would be better for public discourse than a short fuse, no?” he suggested to the billionaire in his tweet. “Sure,” Musk said in his short but crisp response.

Meanwhile, the world’s richest man said on Saturday that Twitter users could in future choose the version of the social media platform they like by rating their tweets.

“It’s probably better to be able to choose which version of Twitter you want, as it would be for a movie maturity rating,” he said.

“A tweet’s rating can be self-selected, then modified by user feedback,” the new owner of the platform added in his tweet.
