Without the exceptional IB curriculum, I would have had no clue how to proceed

An alumnus of Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, is proud of having the opportunity to study and settle in his dream country – North America!

By Abhilasha Munjal: Graduation ceremonies mark a pivotal milestone, celebrating academic achievements and transitions into new life stages. One such student who crossed this milestone is Tejas Kapil.

A diligent student, Tejas, who had lived in the US before he came to India and finally joined Apeejay School International, is exceptionally enthusiastic. As the Head Boy at ASI and was also named Student of the Year 2024, he is all set to embark on a new adventure at the University of Toronto.

In a candid telephone conversation, he spoke about his journey and how his experience at ASI helped him grow and achieve his dreams.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a recent graduate from Apeejay School International (ASI). I hold a strong interest in Economics. Hence, I pursued the DP program. I chose to focus on this subject for my Extended Essay (EE) as well. I am excited to share that I have been accepted to the University of Toronto, and I’ve also been awarded a $145,000 scholarship.

So how did you feel when you heard about your admission and scholarship?

It felt unreal because I was genuinely surprised to receive the scholarship. I didn’t think I would be able to. I am incredibly grateful to the school and my family because of their constant support, motivation, and guidance throughout my school years in my academic journey.

Have you always envisioned studying abroad?

I’ve always had a strong connection to North America, having lived in the US for seven years. This experience left a lasting impression on me, and I’ve always dreamt of returning or at least maintaining a connection to the region. The US holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to pursue my studies and future endeavours in this part of the world.

What are your goals?

I have always wanted to study, live, and eventually settle in the US. I accepted an offer to study for a Bachelor’s degree in Management, with the possibility of focusing on Statistics as well. Originally, I applied for a dual-degree programme combining a BBA and Statistics over five years, but now I’ve decided to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Management.

How did the IB curriculum prepare you well for university-level studies at ASI?

Without the IB programme, I would have had no clue how to write essays well or understand the structure of universities. The IB prepared me by teaching me how to work effectively, develop good study habits, and engage in extracurricular activities.

How well did the Theory of Knowledge programme prepare you for critical thinking and reflection in universities abroad?

Many foreign universities value an international mindset and the ability to consider multiple perspectives. This is especially important because students come from diverse countries and backgrounds.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) component of the IB programme explores these concepts thoroughly. It helped me understand and appreciate different viewpoints, which is crucial in a global academic environment. TOK played a significant role in preparing me to think critically and adapt to various perspectives, enhancing my overall understanding and grasp of complex issues.

What advice would you like to give to current IB students who are considering studying abroad?

If you’re in the DP programme, it’s crucial to make good use of your summer break. That’s one thing I know for sure. Engage in some meaningful activities — something productive. You should focus on your Internal Assessments (IAs) and other projects.

Dedicate 30 minutes to an hour every day to studying. Consistency is the key, and maintaining a steady routine will prove incredibly beneficial in the long run.
