An interview with Ar. Gagandeep Kapila, Ar. Bhuvan Kapila, co-founders of Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA)

In this insightful interview, we speak with Gagandeep and Bhuvan Kapila, the dynamic co-founders of Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA). Known for their innovative approach to urban design, the Kapilas have been at the forefront of transforming metropolitan landscapes.

They share their vision, inspirations, and the driving force behind their groundbreaking work in architecture, offering a glimpse into the future of urban spaces.

Ar. Gagandeep, Ar. Bhuvan, can you tell us about the journey that led to the founding of the Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA)? What were the key moments that defined your vision for modern luxury and contextual design?

Ar. Gagandeep Kapila: The journey that led to the founding of the Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA) is deeply rooted in our passion for architecture and the urban environment.

After years of experience working with some of the leading architecture firms in the industry, we realised that there was a gap for a firm that combined modern luxury with a sense of context and place.

We wanted to create spaces that were not just designed with an eye on aesthetics, but also deeply connected to their surroundings. Our design philosophy is centered on the idea that modern luxury should feel timeless and deeply rooted in its context.

One key moment that defined our vision for modern luxury was a project where we worked closely with a team to integrate natural elements and sustainable materials into an urban environment.

This experience gave us an understanding that luxury does not have to be synonymous with extravagance. Instead, it could be about crafting spaces that are refined and respectful of the environment and the people who inhabit them.

Your work often reflects a deep understanding of context. How do you integrate local culture, environment, and history into modern designs without compromising on luxury? Can you give an example from one of your projects?

Ar. Bhuvan Kapila: Integrating local culture, environment, and history into modern designs without compromising luxury is central to our philosophy at the Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA).

The essence of true luxury lies in crafting spaces that feel authentic, timeless, and in harmony with their surroundings. Luxury, in our view, isn’t about ostentation but about crafting meaningful, immersive experiences that people can connect with!

A great example of this approach is a recent project where we designed a high-end residential building in a historic district. The site was surrounded by traditional architecture with rich textures and materials, such as brickwork and wooden shutters.

Rather than imposing a starkly modern building, we chose to incorporate these materials and elements into the design in new, innovative ways.

The facade blended traditional brick with sleek, contemporary glass, and offered a clear reflection of the environment while still feeling luxurious. Inside, we used locally sourced stone and wood, bringing in elements that evoke a sense of place, while the open floor plans, natural light, and high-end finishes created a modern, luxurious atmosphere.

The result was a project that not only honoured its surroundings but also provided a sophisticated, modern living experience—proving that luxury and context can go hand in hand.

Can you walk us through your design process from initial concept to completion? How do you ensure that the client’s vision and your architectural expertise come together seamlessly?

Ar. Gagandeep Kapila: Our design process begins with a brainstorming session, exploring myriad approaches to design. We understand the client’s preferences and requirements, ensuring our design and creativity align with their goals.

From colour palettes to material selections, every aspect of our design results in a fusion of mesmerising aesthetics. We include state-of-the-art technologies in design and explore various software, pushing our boundaries and offering unique architectural solutions.

Sustainability and the use of innovative materials are becoming increasingly important in modern architecture. How do you incorporate eco-friendly practices and materials into luxury designs without compromising their aesthetic appeal?

Ar. Gagandeep Kapila: We include sustainable elements in our designs- be it materials or strategies in designs. From reclaimed wood to recycled materials, we ensure that our designs do not harm the environment while being authentic and unique.

Further, advanced technologies like energy-efficient glazing, solar integration, and adaptive shading systems enhance functionality while reducing ecological impact. These materials and techniques are integrated into designs, preserving the opulence and sophistication that define luxury.

You’ve worked on a variety of high-end residential, commercial, and boutique spaces. Could you share one project that particularly stands out to you and why? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

Ar. Bhuvan Kapila: We have worked on a high-end residential project in a historic neighborhood, where the client wanted to blend modern luxury with the area’s traditional aesthetic. The challenge was balancing the contemporary features—like smart home integration and sleek, minimalist designs—while respecting the historical architecture.

We overcame this by carefully selecting materials and finishes that enhanced modern and traditional elements.

For example, we used reclaimed wood for accent walls, which not only brought warmth to the space but also paid homage to the area’s history. This project stands out because it was a perfect blend of innovation and respect for heritage, and the client was thrilled with the outcome.

How do you see the future of architecture evolving in terms of luxury and contextual design?

Ar. Bhuvan Kapila: The future of architecture lies at the intersection of luxury and contextual design, blending opulence with sensitivity to surroundings. As sustainability gains prominence, luxury will be redefined through innovative materials and adaptive reuse of spaces.

Contextual design will emphasise harmony with local environments, drawing inspiration from cultural and geographical narratives. Advanced technologies like parametric design and AI will enable personalised creations, balancing grandeur with purpose.

This evolution reflects a shift toward architecture, offering bespoke experiences that respect the essence of place while embracing the sophistication of modern living.

The architecture industry often comes with various pressures, from client expectations to budget constraints. How do you both manage to stay true to your creative vision while meeting these demands?

Ar. Gagandeep Kapila: In architecture, staying true to a creative vision while meeting client expectations and working within budget constraints comes down to effective communication. From the outset, we make sure to fully understand the client’s desires and needs.

We always aim to set realistic expectations, and through collaborative dialogue, we align their vision with what’s feasible in terms of budget, time, and space.

If a project faces budget constraints, we explore cost-effective materials and innovative design solutions that don’t compromise the aesthetic or function.

Sometimes, it is about making strategic choices that allow for flexibility and creativity in key areas, like using custom-designed elements in focal spaces, while simplifying elsewhere to stay on budget.

For us, creativity is not just about expensive finishes but about designing meaningful, functional spaces that resonate with the client and users.

For young architects looking to make an impact in the field, especially in luxury and contextual design, what advice would you give? What qualities or skills do you think are crucial for success in this evolving industry?

Ar. Bhuvan Kapila: For young architects, we advise them to keep learning more and always stay updated with innovations and software in design. Architecture is more than just creativity, it is a fusion of various elements and hence consistency and knowledge base are essential to keep up with the evolving industry.

Gagandeep and Bhuvan Kapila’s passion for redefining urban environments through sustainable and thoughtful design continues to inspire.

Their work at WMA not only elevates the aesthetic of cities but also enhances the functionality and sustainability of urban living, shaping the cities of tomorrow.
